make_urself Mar 21, 2005 09:33 AM

I was just wondering if you can safely feed tegus inexpensive and common human store bought foods like raw chicken, beef, or say canned tuna. I HAVE NOT TRIED FEEDING THESE ITEMS TO MY ANIMALS!! hehe So plz dont flame me or anything. I am simply asking out of curiosity and would like to know. Plz respond. Thank you.

You sure can with ground turkey as this is the main ingredient in the san diego zoo diet. With chicken, though I do typically boil this and dice into pieces safe enough for the age/size of the respective tegu. Also a high quality canned food can be used (wysong, eukanuba, etc.)

Good luck!!!

Mashed potatos and gravy, cheese fries, stir fry, lunch meat, left over turkey, chicken. Anything with cheese on it. Really just about anything as long as it's not too greasy, fatty, etc. But then the obvious question is why am I eating the greasy, fatty, etc.

Hehe this is a big relief. Tuna is so relatively inexpensive compared to the pet shop fuzzies that are like a buck fifty a piece hehe. I will definately be changing up to diet lol.

Here's another option that I'm planning on doing down the road. Raw chicken and turkey is a healthy option for dogs. You can usually find ground chicken necks and turkey necks for around $1.50/lb at high end pet stores. It's the consistency of hamburger, but has the added benefit of calcium from the raw bones. If you can find a place that sells whole necks, you can get them much cheaper than that, and then grind them up yourself. Mix in some veggies and you're good to go.

Raw ground turkey is good, and they really seem to enjoy it (especially if you mix an egg in with it)
