Female just laid 3rd clutch, has never been with male

Jay_Gatz Mar 21, 2005 07:59 PM

I've got a female crested that just keeps laying infertile eggs. Shes almost 2 years old now, well past the "reaching maturity" stage where I have heard some females lay infertile clutches. I'm adding a pinch of calcium (w/ d3) to the CGD to keep her calcium stores up.

I posted earlier and someone suggested a cooling period. Is there a danger of this increasing the risk of a respitory illness? I've got another female in the cage, too, by the way.

Suggestions or similar experiences?

I have four female cresties all around the same age and one of mine started laying eggs. Then I realized that she was the only one that had her cage near the males cage. I'm guessing just by seeing him and smelling him so close stimulated her to lay eggs. I don't know if yours is close to a male but it's just a guess.

Remembered that de vosjoli et al said, among other problems, too much d3 can actually cause ovulation. So i've switched to pure calcuim.

I don't know if you should switch to pure calcium. Correct me if I am wrong, but reptiles need D3 to process calcium. You may try either feeding CGD by itself, or dust your crickets less fequently.
