A few venomous snakes of Peruvian Amazonas

rdbartlett Jul 09, 2003 10:58 AM

Many coral snakes and pit vipers are found in Amazonas.
Except for the fer-de-lance, which is abundant, others are only seldom seen. In fact, we have seen only a single example each of the Anazon black-backed coral snake and the bushmaster after many years of travel to the region.

Bothrops atrox. The babies of this large pit viper have a yellow or white tail tip that usually darkens with advancing age.

Micrurus lemniscatus helleri.
This is a slender and brightly colored coral snake of moderate size (to about 3 feet).

Notice that in this species following the "nursery rhyme" could have bad results.....

Bothriopsis taeniatus. This is the larger of the two species of forest pit vipers in Amazonian Peru. This subadult example was found coiled among plants at clearing-edge.

I bet it would be really nice in a large planted terrarium with live bromeliads, etc.

it was a whole lot nicer in the field with bromeliads all around it. This was an exciting find Carl. rdb

it's kinda hard to really watch them for long when they are in PERU.

Micrurus surinamensis. This is the largest and seemingly the most common of the coral snakes in the region. This juvenile example was found foraging in the flooded hoof-prints in a water buffalo wallow.
