Incubators

bradh Mar 22, 2005 04:26 PM

Im on the verge of buying one of those hova-bator still air models for my forthcoming Diamond eggs. Im wondering if anyone has any feedback about these, good or bad, and any other ideas I might need in the next few months. I've read all the articles, by Stan Chiras and anyone else. I need some good firsthand Diamond breeding info, times, temps, humidity anything relevant. Thanks!! Brad

Spend a few extra bucks and get the hova-bator with the built in circulatory fan (turbofan). It will generate a more even heat than the still-air model (which can create hot spots). Other than that, it should work out fine. Just be sure to include a thermometer and humidity indicator inside the incubator to monitor the incubation environment.

I disagree with ya on that one. That little fan can definately cause some problems if not monitored 24/7. It circulates too much air for such a small space, causing possible humidity problems. With a larger incubator it may be beneficial, but not for a hovabator. It's just my opinion, but one that is shared by many who have used them before.

I agree, don't use the turbo fan. Great for incubating bird eggs which need warmer air, but gets to hot for lizards and snakes. Unless you modify it with more breath holes, but that is just a higher power usage due to lost heat.

Hovabators are way to unreliable for pythons eggs. I'm sure someone will jump in and say they've hatched hundreds of eggs in their's but if you spent what I think you spent on those snakes you should be able to invest a little more for a very reliable incubator. You can make a professional incubator for not much more than a hova. Buy a small melamine cabinet at home depot for about $40. Get some flex watt or heat cord and a decent thermostat and you're in business. I'll take some pictures of mine and post them today so you can see hw easy it is.
