I need your help on this one guys!!!

jack7777766 Jul 09, 2003 11:35 AM

things with my mali have been going a little better so far...
Since ive been giving her those cricket feed pellets when I take her out to handle her.
She is still hissing however and still tries to run away from my hand, if I let her go shell run like the wind!!!
And when I put her back in her cage she blazes to her hide.

Im kinda getting attached to her, but Im also wondering if she will eever be the pet I want her to be????

The NY Metro show is coming up soon so I have been pondering if I should give the guys I bought her from a call and see if I could return her and then buy a CB for Douglas Dix or Lindsay Pike which I should have done in the first place.

I just dont know though. I wouldnt want her to then be sold to someone and that because of her temperament they would treat her bad!!!! I know I sometimes feel like beating the crap out of her...jk

I still want to have a mali both because they eat vegetables which is a nice change from all my other lizards, Its just the right size to be a pet and theyre supposed to be calm (of course mine isnt)

What do you guys think???
Will she become the pet I want her to be????
If I give her back will they (whoever the next owner is) treat her bad???
I wish I could release her back to her habitat
what should I do???

Jack

i'm glad. maybe the mate you get could be a captive bred, as long as your wild caught has been treated for parasites it shouldn't be a problem. if your uro has stopped biting, maybe you could try the cheek-rubbing method i discovered that females seem to like. just put her on your lap, cover her with your shirt or something then reach under and gently stroke her cheeks, the chubby part behind her mouth.

I don't know if this applies to everybody, but i found that once my malis started living together they calmed down so much. neither of them was ever quite so hostile as yours, but they occasionally tail-whipped and certainly didn't hold still to be held EVER. have you thought of getting her a little friend, perhaps? quinn, my little uro girl who is the apple of my eye, used to be very hostile. but when we moved to this apartment and put her in with our big male, ricky, she immediately started to calm a bit (i also worked with her at least 3 or 4 times a week, even if it wasjust taking her out of her cage and letting her run around me). and now she is such a peach, i have never met a more friendly or loveable lizard than quinn. and again, patience and persistence is key.

I had suggested a friend for her earlier and I still stand by that. If she is WC you'll have a very hard time calming her down by yourself since they see humans as just another predator. She'll at least recognize another uro as less threatening. Also, since you fear giving her up because of how another owner may treat her means you've become very attached to her and shouldn't give up hope. I thought Ra would never calm down and now he's running up and licking my hand as I'm replacing the food in his bowl. Maybe a nice CB male will calm her now and make her less aggressive. This way, you can also choose the attitude of the male, thus providing you with the "ideal" pet you wanted. Good luck

Sunfox I put your name cause you said you had recomended a cagemate, Im for not reading that post.
Anyways that is a good idea.
The only herp I ever gave away was a Chilean Dwarf Tegu who I gave away because he was feisty, I always regret it, If I see a picture of one I always feel bad. So Im think I wont give up on her.
Ill try to contact Douglas Dix or Lindsay Pike and maybe get a CB male.

Thanks guys
Jack

Jack, I'm sorry things aren't going well with the uro and all, she is wild caught.. it's just a natural thing to do, because how many humans do they cross in the wild? I don't think you should give it up. I have a CB female mali, who is jumpy.. but she seems to be fine once I get her out.. and it took awhile. I have a male mali whom I've had for almost over a year now and he runs like hell once you get him out.

That is a very beautiful lizard you have, and I'm sure the extra effort you're giving this will be worth every hour of torment.
