Baby Leo NOT EATING PLEASE HELP

Triad Mar 22, 2005 10:23 PM

Ok my brothers leo isn't eating.

My brother got him Friday, March 18, 2005. He's about 3 1/2 inches long and probably weighs 1-2 grams.

He ate a wax worm on Friday and then on Saturday he had between 1-3 more(I think, my brother's the one who feeds him).

He hasn't eaten since and he's a little one, a runt if you can call them that.

Is there anything we can do to get him to eat? We want him to eat so...

Any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED.

have already tried small dusted crickets and he wont touch them. He had eaten wax worms the saturday (the day after I got him.) He ate 4 of them, but since then has yet to eat anything. We have tried hand feeding him, not hand feeding him, feeding him dusted crickets, non dusted crickets, dusted wax worms, non dusted wax worms, during the night, during the day, and just about any other combination you can think of. Im running low on ideas though and he's really small so if he doesnt start eating Im afraid he'll die.

Try cutting the head off a waxworm and squeeze the guts of it onto a small cricket or small recently molted mealworm. I wouldn't continue feeding him waxworms because soon that will be all they want to eat.

Also try leaving the baby alone for a bit. You should let new leos aclimate for a couple of days before handling them and stressing them out even more.

Where did you get these leos from, Petco perhaps? There is a good chance that they may have parasites and if he doesn't eat by this Friday I would take them both to the vet for a fecal.

I agree with the above post. It is a good possibility your leo is just stressed, make sure your brother knows he is not to handle him at all until you get him eating properly.

As soon as you see a fecal, if you do, bring it to the vet to be looked at for parasites.

I would leave him alone, not even trying to feed him for a couple of days. Waving bugs in his face or trying to stuff them in his mouth will only stress him more. After a couple of days try feeding him again.

Of course as with any case of a lizard not eating, check all your husbandry. Are his temps hot enough (85-90degrees on the hot side), does he have plenty of hiding spaces?

Is he housed alone? If there is another leo in there with him seperate them immediately as the presence of another leo may be enough to stress him into not eating.

Good luck!

In case you didn't see my first post or in case I didn't put it already: not housed with anything else.

The baby has a tank of his own, he WAS going to be housed with mine but he's too small so WE ALL DECIDED to NOT put him in just IN CASE mine accidentally stepped on him. Small baby= EXTREMELY FRAGILE.

Yes he was gotten from Petco, feces are clear, no traces of parasites because you can see them in the leo's poop.

We haven't touched him, hand feeding: took wax worm between tweezers. Haven't touched him, didn't even touch him the day they got him or when he got him home, they let him crawl out of the box into his new home.

Im sorry but youa re incorrect about being able to see all parasites in a leo's poop. If that was true why would anyone bring fecals to the vet? Parasites and their eggs are extremely small, and while some can be seen with the naked eye, most need to be viewed under a microscope.

Sorry i asked if they were together, i did not see the before post. It is really good you have not been handling him. I would bring a fecal sample to the vet and if he isnt eating in a few days i would set up an appointment.

good luck!
