"Disposable Cage Liners INC" Do you use their liners? why/why not?

ladysharon Jul 09, 2003 11:41 AM

Hi... this is a company on kingsnake... These look like good liners... and I wanted to change the substraight from repti-bark.

Do you use these liners? Can you use them over a heating element without them catching fire?

Thank you for your time.

Oh and I am not talking generic "disposable liners" I am talking about the liners from THIS COMPANY. The company is listed under "cages/supplies".

I tried a roll of the the product a while back. Basically it's kraft paper. One sheet wasn't enough for my Irian Jaya carpet pythons (in 3-foot Neos) when they peed. Kind of like using only a couple sheets of newspaper. Just a soaking mess.

I was so disappointed I threw the roll out.

I'll stick with newspaper.

Hmmm... well I only have garter snakes... so it might not be as bad... but your reply does give food for thought.

Thank you for replying.

Hi Sharon.

With garter snakes it should be fine. The convenience and selling point is the pre-measured size.

When I was ordering my roll the gentleman told me that he customers who kept retics on the cage liners.

Now, I've seen a few retics. When they go, they go. And you'll have a soggy mess in the cage unless you use multiple layers of DCL paper.

But if you can get your exact size and use it with garters, it should work well.

Bill

PS: Do an Internet search for Kraft paper. That comes in different thicknesses, I think. It would work just as well and is probably cheaper.

Hi Sharon -

Since you were adamant that you wanted answers only from those who used the product marketed by Disposable Cage Liners Inc., I wasn’t going to answer. But perhaps you might find some more input helpful.

The product you are discussing is 60 lb. indented kraft paper, not plain kraft paper. It is readily available in rolls and precut sheets from shipping supply companies, many of which offer same day shipping. True, it is not the most absorbent paper product. For absorbency, it’s hard to beat plain old newsprint. So I use a combination. I buy cut sheets of 30 lb. newsprint (unprinted newspaper), and cut sheets as well as rolls of 60 lb. indented kraft. In cages with large pythons which produce lots of liquid wastes, I might still put down regular newspaper and cover that with the indented kraft and perhaps throw some newsprint on top. In some cages I use only the kraft, in other cages only the newsprint. Why the bother and the added expense? Mostly aesthetics, I guess. And I hate newspaper ink all over me, the animals, and the cage furniture.

Yes, you can “use them over a heating element without them catching fire”, assuming your heating element stays below around 400 degrees F.

For garter snakes, which tend to be kind of messy, I’d recommend sheets of plain newsprint.

You can get rolls of plain newsprint from craft stores, or you can also get rolls of butcher paper (unwaxed) from your grocer. Just ask your butcher to order a roll for you. Want pre-cut width? Easy! Grab a measuring tape & a saw & go to town on the roll *before* starting to unroll it...
Long as you gut straight, you have a uniform wideth roll just waiting for you to cut a piece off...
BTW, a roll of butcher paper here in VT is about $17.

I guess I'm a little different than the others here. I use the indented Kraft paper and I love it. I use it for my colubrids and my boas and balls. It does work better for the colubrids, but still works good for all my snakes.

When the boas and balls really go, I usually notice and change it out (they really don't go more than 1 or 2 times a week). I feel it is much better than newspaper. When newspaper gets wet, it really stinks bad. The Kraft paper doesn't seem to stink as bad.

Just my opinion,

Hi. Thanks for all the replys.

I think I should have refrased my subject line and added someting... liek do you use them or a product like them...

ANYWAY I'm confused with the "kraft paper" deal. When I think of kraft paper I think of drawing or construction paper... you get it wet and it soaks through. This webside made it sound like this product was a thin cloth...

So this deal makes me concerned because... these are florida blues... an d I'll probally stick moss at one end of the cage and wet it sometimes by dumping a (small) cup of water on it. I don't want the water running all over the cage.

I use paper towels in my small temporary holding cages if I need to take someone to the vet or if they need to be fed seperately... I have found that when papertowels get wet and then dry they STICK TO THE CAGE. So I was hopeing this product didn't do that.

Here is a quote from their site:
"Introducing the best disposable cage liner available!!
Highly absorbent, mold resistent, indented surface
aids in the shedding process."

Ok when I read "highly absorbent" I think like a sponge here.

The website is below
http://www.kingsnake.com/cageliners/

Btw... someone said they talked to the guy... I assume over the phone. But I can't find a phone number. I diddn't know that when I wrote this.

oh and there is absolutly no way I could life 60lb. try 20.

>>oh and there is absolutly no way I could life 60lb

60 lb is the “basis weight”, a measure in the paper business. Like paper sheets for your printer might be described as 24 lb, but the package weighs only a couple of pounds. So a 360 foot roll of 36” wide, 60 lb indented kraft paper weighs 26 pounds.

Why not ask them to mail you a sample?

bc_reptiles Jul 10, 2003 05:13 PM

Yes, just email him and tell him what sizes your cages are, and if you pay for shipping, he will send you some samples. I sent off for samples from him a couple of years ago. I think the FedEx was $5.00 and he sent me about 10 sheets so that I could try them!

It is indented kraft paper. If feels like a cross between
paper and thin cardboard.

hmmmm.... I was going to ask him to fold it and ship it in a big envolope.... so he pays like 60 cents. I don't need it fed exed exp sence I would have to BE HOME. All I want is enough for my 20 gal and for a small critter cage.

Just a one time use... I'll email him tommorow.. .I'd feel better if they had the company number up there though.

I’m sorry. I don’t understand the question. Also, you keep saying there is no phone number but it is right here on the website. But, like I said, I don’t even buy from DCL.

ladysharon Jul 12, 2003 11:57 AM

ok... first when you typed

>> btw how did you quote... and it's in italics... that's a quote from my post... how did you get the system to quote? It used to automatically put up the privoius person's quote.

Second... DUH I didn't even think to look at the shipping page! normally there is a "contact us" link and that has the email addresses as well as the phone. I can't belive this... they are that expencive and they don't have a 1 800 #?

oh well.
