Ceramic Floor Tiles

frye Mar 23, 2005 01:07 PM

Does anyone know if ceramic floor tiles be used in the tank or if there is anything toxic in them for uros? If it can what kind of non toxic adhesive would you use to stick them together.

Any help appreciated.

I have been using slate tiles from home depot under the basking areas-natural product come in 12 and 15 " squares---
Every now and then you get a brittle one that cracks , but for the most part they hold up well, wash easily and are inexpensive.
That and some preformed black cement "stones" from there as well...seem to take in alot of radiation and release it slowly ower the night.
Maybe a thin set mortar? No real clue to adhesives to use....

I have several basking stacks that I made from slate and other stone and used aquarium grade silicone to attach them. It's very secure and can be separated again with a razor blade if you need to take it apart. If it's not toxic for fish in the water, it should be fine for incidental contact with the lizards. Just give it several days to dry thoroughly because it stinks. Bleah.

I built a dragon enclosure just recently and I used liquid nails to glue ceramic tile to the back wall, I then used a sand colored grout to fill the cracks. I was concerned with a few things but it turned out great. The tile are natural looking with a decorative twist and the ceramic absorbs heat all day and releases it all night. I have pics I could email you if you would like them email me at dalejr2598@yahoo.com

I really wouldn't, sand is the best substrate to use for Uros, I strongly suggest you use sand.

I use sand for the substrate but I am trying to construct something more secure for basking areas than the slate rocks that I have. They have been very hard to secure and the uros try to dig under them and the fear is that the rocks will end up hurting them if they were to shift. So I was toying with the idea of making basking areas out of tiles that could be glued together and secured to the bottom of the tank so there would be no fear that they could get hurt.

Would the tiles absorb too much heat and burn the uro? Or does ceramic do exactly the opposite? (which is why you're supposed to use a ceramic light fixture for a heat bulb)
