It is The general care and maintenance of garter snakes and water snakes by David Pelowin. It has many interesting things in it. There is a disorde called steatitis. It is a build up of fat under the skin. Do you think a diet of rodents could cause that? IT said it is caused by oily fish. It has pics of albino northerns, diamond backs, florida bandeds and a scaleless northern. I have not seen but one scaleless snake before and it was a garter. I have got to get one!!!! Ben siegal said he might have soem het albinos ( I am to cheap to buy an albino ) this spring.

Have'nt seen the book Justin. Feeding your waters rodents does seem to be a way to avoid "steatitus". Notwithstanding, it's not a great idea to over-feed whatever the food is (which you already know).
Back to the book ... the closest I have is by W.P. Mara, one of water snakes and the other of garters.

AFAIK, steatitis results from too much fat from whatever source. In one of Fred Frye's books (Reptile Care???), it mentioned an alligator that got steatitis from a diet of obese rats.
