When are collards mature?

crotaphytusman Mar 23, 2005 03:13 PM

Recently my female collard lost a little (not a lot but noticible in her tail) weight but she is gaining it back now and eating like a hog. She was really really fat about a month ago. I was going to give her Panacur just to be sure about parasites. I have not yet given it to her and she is gaining weight just fine (I am waiting to get it delivered, should come today). My first question is that is it possible she lost weight because she is gravid? I have also noticed she is getting her orange bands on the sides of her but I never cooled them. She is with a male and I have seen them coppulate a few times but I don't know if they are sexualy mature. They are about a year old now ( born around 4/04 ). I have heard it takes 1.5 - 2 years for them to be able to reproduce but I'm wondering if their are any exceptions to this. I have noticed that on her left side she has a small bulge that struck me when I got back from a month long trip. Sorry about all the questions but they mean a lot to me and I just want them to be happy. Any help would be great. Thanks

This is a picture of Sedona. You can see a little of her orange bands. She looks a little bigger from the last picture.

I would not treat her for worms while/ or IF shes gravid. Do that this fall or after breeding season.

A female can get gravid at about 8 - 9 months old. Even though alot do not, they can.

And at a year, its certainly possible. My Young C. vestigium will be a year old in july, but is going nuts on every female he sees right now.

Your pic of Sedona, does look like shes gravid. Keep an eye on her. But like I said I would hold off with the panacur treatment for now.

Thanks, I will hold off on the panacur for now. Is their any sort of way to know if she is gravid other than an X-ray and noticing them in her belly? I am going to set up an incubator just incase as I don't have one right now. Also, how long from them mating, to her laying, to the eggs hatching? Again I am sorry about all the questions and thanks for all the help on this situation!

Here is a page Frequently asked Questions, scroll down to the part on after breeding, how long does it take and read from there,

Under it is also approx. incubation times, hope it helps, I tried to make them detailed but brief, hehehehe !

I just wanted to say thank you so much for all the info! It was all a huge help and saved me serious vet bills as well. So, if their is any way I could ever re-pay you I would. I also noticed you have some nice chucks, another one of my favorites. I have been looking for some CB babies but I have had very little luck. I know it's still a little early for them to be hatching but if you know any breeders let me know. Thanks again for all the help.
