Wierd question to any breeder from a non-breeder...

dmac Mar 23, 2005 03:18 PM

Love seeing all of the birth pics and all the babies. I especially like when three or four totally different looking snakes are in the same litter! I will NEVER understand the Punnit square-don't even try explaining it to me. My question is, in those birth pics, with all the afterbirth goo and all- does it smell? I know that's a weird question but I am just a pet owner and I'll never breed (snakes that is) so I'm curious. It looks like it would smell horrendous, but then, in the wild that would be like advertising and the young would never make it.

and found babies in the morning that were born during the night. To me, there really is much of a smell at all....and it certainly isn't unpleasant. If you have ever been at the birth of puppies, kittens or foals, it's about the same. There is a distinctive scent, but I actually find it rather pleasing. The appreciation you feel for the mother boa and the wonder of all those babies, cancels out any negatives, believe me!! I suppose if newborn boas were to sit for many hours in the fluid, it might start to smell strongly, just as many "organic" things would.

I was in the room when my female started to give birth so at the time I did not notice anything that strange. I removed the mother that night and just left the babies be. When I went in the next morning there was a very distinct smell, almost reminded me of when I worked in a butcher shop. Like very fresh cut meat. Not that unpleasant, but not spring flowers by any means.
