cowtownherper Mar 23, 2005 06:04 PM

I'm getting the Hovabator set up tonight. I am useing deli cups. I would like to know how you guys prepare the vermiculite. I think I have read equal weight vermiculite to water(my corn snake manual is at work). Just curious if anyone has any helpful hints. Thanks

Ive never had success with vermiculite/perlite but that was with chameleon eggs and geckos and oh yeah, I had no idea what I was doing. Last year I bred corns for the first time and used sphagnum moss and it worked great. Anyway, you just want to mix the vermiculite with water and just squeeze out the water. It should clump in your hand but fall apart very easily. Also, use a container that is bigger than you need. The more space you have the easier it will be to maintain humidity. Im sure others will be more wise to the ways of vermiculite. Hope this helps some. Good luck.

I use perlite with a sphagnum moss "tent" on top. It works for me.
I have successfully used all combinations of varmiculite/perlite and sphagnum moss.
