Wild Box Turtle Question

reptileguy5 Mar 23, 2005 07:21 PM

Well heres the thing. I help run a natrue program at a camp in the summer and was wondering if anyone knew any good kinds of areas or times of days, temperatures during a day, or weather good to find box turtles. I would like to show the kids some wild ones and not just some rinky-dinky store bought one from home.

There would be no difference between a wild box turtle and a captive bred that would be discernable by a child, other than perhaps observing it in a natural setting. Many of the "rinky dink store bought" ones are wild caught anyway.
Where is your camp? Is it a part of the country where box turtles are indigenous? Would you intend to take the kids on a turtle search? Or are you hoping to find one to bring in to show the kids?

My camp does have box turtles around because they have been sighted by the ropes crew on several occassions. My camp is toward the Poconos. Anyway, I would like to do a turtle hunt. The campers have seen lots of Terripans in the lake but we cant use it normally due to another group using it at the time.

Because their activity levels vary with temperature and weather, during the warmest part of the summer they will probably be most active in the very early morning hours before heat builds. Another period of peak activity would be during or after a good rain, especially a rain storm following a week or two (or more) of dry weather.
