Scary situation....but very interesting......for breeders especially.....

Luke9815 Mar 23, 2005 09:10 PM

I've never seen this before...and the breeders and vets that I consulted had never seen or heard of this before either. I had a pair of snakes together breeding and when I checked on them, they had a puddle of blood under them. They had been locked up earlier that day but were no longer breeding now. My first thought was that the female pulled the males pene out....but I looked in the puddle and found this (pic attached at bottom) It was a round fleshy mass that I had no idea what I was looking at. It definitly freaked me out....but from what I have concluded....that this is in fact an aborted follicle. There really is nothing in the body that resembles this mass that came out of the snake other than a follicle. It is very weird and thank God it hasn't affected the snake...she is still breeding well and should produce for me this season...with what I"m guessing will be one less follicle. If anyone has heard or seen this before please post your experience. Its been in the freezer in a bag for a while so its kind of squished...but this is it....

Whatever it is the Vet should be able have it processed and examined if you feel that is needed. It is hard to see but it may just be a blood clot that has organized from a slow bleed in the area. There are alot of things it could be. If it was an infarcted follicle I would think the animal would have shown some symptoms associated with the infarction. It will be interesting to see how she does. Good luck.

Weird.
Could it have been something that it had eaten (or inside a
food item) that the snake was unable to process?
Glad to hear that otherwise the snake is okay...

I never brought it to a vet....I just spoke with my vet and showed it to him. We never did an official vet visit. If the snake would have shown signs of illness or whatnot I would have definitly brought her in. The vet said that there is really nothing else in the body with that texture and shape that could come out like that. It most likely isn't anything she ate because all it was was blood and the mass that came out....she also hadn't eaten since october....
Thanks for your thoughts...

I have never seen that but i do not think that is what that is!

They are not shaped like that and so well vasculated...that actually looks very much like some form of flesh. A follicle should not look like that in my limited mind.

I had a pair of snakes breed and the male perforated the females bowel and killed her a few days after they were done locking up. There was blood everywhere and I had no idea where it had come from. Then I found here dead and opened her up, she smelled terrible when she was cut.

I think it is something else, what it is Luke I am not exactly shure!!

Good luck with them - kev

send that pic to Dave Barker at VPI........

I know...I use him alot ,,,but who else we going to ask???

the only thing I can think of it being is a blood clot........

it looks like some tumors//cysts that I have cut out of mice *(necropsy--experiments--learnings)......

......cancer or cysts would not just plop out of the body....

.blood clot formed slowly in a downward dripping motion that clotted really nice and round?.........probably wouldn't happen ,,,but I've seen dumber stuff..........

.........VPI .......ask him.then let us all know........
