New Wood Frog Tank Top

johnachilli Mar 23, 2005 10:23 PM

I got sick of looking at the ugly screen top and lights on my tree frog tank, which is a 20 gal xhigh (custon made from two 10 gal tanks), so i built this nice wood canopy for it. It hold two 18inch strips lights. These pictures arent the best, I'll post better ones if i can get some tomorrow. I used the minwax wipe on poly over some stain, and I believe it is birch laminate plywood. I was thinking about making a few more if anyone was interested.

The pictures may not be great but it looks like the cuts are first rate.

Now did you join it together? Bisquits, dowls, nails, or what?

Thanks Chris!
I just used glue and a few nails, I figured it wasn't going to have a lot of load bearing so I didnt need to over do it. The top part is removalable and I mounted the lights right to that. These pictures might be better... you can see the snow out the window that we just got last night.

John,

Where are you located? The scene out of your window looks remarkably similar to what I'm seeing here in South Dakota this AM.

Did you make all the cuts on a table saw, mitre saw, or both?

Chris,

I live in Connecticut we got a freak storm last night with a lot of snow. Half has already melted and its only noon, so I dont think it is going to last long. I used both a table and mitre saw. I used the table to rip the plywood into the strips and to rip a 45 degree angle along the long side of a few other strips. Once I had the strips (some with a 45 on one side and the others with out) I used the compound mitre to cut them to length. It was a good amount of cutting but fairly easy once I found a crown molding chart online that gave me the compound angles to get those corners to fit perfect. I also used the table saw to rip 1/2" strips that I used to make a lip on the inside of the top to sit on the tank lip and to attached the screening to.
