I would reccomend at least 36" long. I personally feel that a 24" length is not large enough to house a full grown chondro, and from personal experience - if you do build a larger cage, they will use it.

I was thinking about downsizing my cages to 20" cubes. They don't seem to use the entire cage as you speculate. A 24" cube is plenty big for an adult. I've been using tubs that measure 24" long X 16" wide X 17" tall to house a coupld of adults. I bred them this year, and expect a pre-lay shed any day. The female from this pair will actually go to the ground and stop eating if she's placed in a larger cage. Some of my other adult cages measure 24" l X 16" w X 24" t, and I've also bred several clutches from using these dimensions. In my opinion, a 36" long is overkill, unless you just want a nice looking large cage. The bigger the cage, the harder it is to get the heat and humidity correct.....not that there is a correct. I do things quite a bit different than some. Here's a pic of what I woke up to yesterday.....17 eggs and all fertile.
