PIXIE FROG QUESTIONS

ludubbz Mar 24, 2005 09:03 AM

I just got a pixie frog last night, and he's already pretty big. The idiots at the store I went to gave me a lot of misinformation about his needs. For one they said a tank completely filled with water about 2" high with a rock to climb out onto would be good for him, and they didn't mention his temperature needs. I am trying to figure out what kind of habitat is really best, and what kind of lighting as well. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE ANY INFORMATION, AS I REALLY WANT TO TAKE GOOD CARE OF THIS GUY. Please post to this forum or send me a email at work, as I plan to stop off at the petstore on the way home to pick up anything I might need.
work email: bookseller167@yahoo.com
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ANY HELP.
Lucian.

yea water is not a good idea to have you frog live its life in, all though it is fine for a temporary environment. But if you'r frog is kept in water he will eventually develop the disease red leg. For you pixie, it can be just like an horned frogs setup. For subsrate I would use the coco fiber, Bed A' Beast, Eco Earth etc. there all the same. Add a rather large water bowl to your pixies tank because he will grow into it. Now you can lieve it at there, which i would suggest, or you can add moss or cork bark to your tank for looks. Mist your tank twice a day, once in the mourning and once at night. For lighting I would suggest a simple dome lamp with a 40 watt daylight bulb and a 40 watt. nightlight bulb. Other then that thats what your pixies setup can look like for it to have a happy healthy life span, remember though that your frog, if it is a male, will get huge and you will need to get a bigger tank within a year or so. good luck with your new frog, I love my pixie, lol its awesome to watch him eat!

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. You're right I love watching mine eat too. Do you think a half water, half land Aquarium would be good for him, or would I run the same risks of infection. Cause he really seems to like staying in the water a lot. I put a 2 1/2 inch divider in last night and filled one side with moss from the petstore, and put a ramp in, but he just stayed in the water all night. This may be because he has difficulty getting up though, I'm not quite sure, but he doesn't even seem to be trying. He ate another mouse last night as well, so he seems to be relatively healthy for the time being.

I'm sure that he's healthy. And a half and half setup would be fine as long as you know that he can get in and out of the water as he likes to. I use that setup for my budgets frog and it seems to work good. also he should eventually come out of the water, mines the same way he will stay in his water bowl sometimes for a week or two before he decides to burrow himself again in the subsrate.

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate having someone who knows about pixie's helping me out. I'm more confidant that he's gonna live a happy life now.

BTW, one of the feeder mice bit me the other day, enough to draw blood. I put alchohol and peroxide on the bite immediately, but should I be worried at all. Is it worth a trip to the doctor.

You should be fine, if it gets any worse then maybe you should see a doctor. I've been bitten before in the store, where I work and I was ok.
