*PICS* Pine Woods Snakes, NEW LENGTH RECORD

HerperHelmz Mar 24, 2005 02:53 PM

Pic of my 4 Pine Woods Snakes, down to 3 now, the biggest one died lol. The smallest one is about 8 inches.

Pic of the biggest one striking at me lol.

Below pic is of the biggest one, which happens to be a new record length. The old record length was 15 and 3/4 inches, just under 16 inches. This snake is 16 and a half inches long.

Too bad he didn't make it. Any ideas on why he died? From the pics he looks a bit thin, I assume he was one of your newbies. Were you ever able to get him to eat?

Nope, no idea as to why or how he died. In the one pic, where he is "striking" at me, he is mouth-open, trying to puke up whatever he ate 15 days before I got him. He was also messed up, the last 1/4 of his body looked as though something heavy fell on it. He died like 3 days after I got him.

Sounds like he was on the way out by the time he got to you

Did you preserve the body? The 70% ethanhol rubbing alcohol you can get at most drug works well. Ideally you'd want to put him in it without freezing him, since freezing will break down cell walls.

Good luck with the survivors!

He's in the freezer right now.

That is very starnge, because I think I have a new record for Nerodia sipedon pleuralis (midland water snake). The old record is like 53". I am almost sure it is bigger than that. I am not saying for sure or not but I think it is. It is the biggest one of this subspecies I have ever seen. I will measure it as soon as it is settled in and eating. This might take a little longer becuase I think it has an eye infection or something and I do not want ot oover stress it. Here it is.

Just going off the size that had to be an old snake. probably the beating up he got (getting caught and shipped) was too much for him.
