There's nothing like having a good camera and capturing some great shots. I love experimenting with different techniques and trying new things. I have only used Nikon cameras and I think they are great. I personally believe that there is something about the way they capture coloration specifically in reptiles, that sets them apart from other camera manufacturers. I have never used any other types of cameras so I can't really comment on how Kodak or Sony or Cannon, etc. cameras are but i can tell you that I have no desire to ever switch from Nikons to another manufacturer.
I started with the Nikon Coolpix 950 which I absolutely loved. I went from that to the Coolpix 995 which was even better because it had a pop-up flash so it didn't wash out my photos as much. I upgraded from the CP995 to the Coolpix 5700. Now that is a fantastic camera too. I only had the CP5700 for a short time before I decided that what I really wanted was more control and flexibility with my equipment so I switched to a D100. That's what I currently use and I love it. I had the Coolpix 3100 somewhere inbetween and had a little experience with the Coolpix 4500 as well.
In the lower price range, I would absolutely recommend the Coolpix 995. They no longer make this camera so you would have to get a used one or find a retailer who still had some new ones in stock. I know you can get it off of Ebay pretty easily and for a fairly cheap price too. In a little higher price range, the Coolpix 5700 is an EXCELLENT camera which retails new for about $450 to $550 now.
I've never used the Coolpix 4100 but if it follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, I'm sure it's a great camera too. I don't think you can really go wrong with a Nikon. It might take a little getting used to and a bit of reading and lots of experimenting, but I think you'll probably be very happy with your choice!
I hope this helps...
Thanks,
Celia
