bearded aggression

vegtam2003 Mar 24, 2005 05:18 PM

yesterday my girlfriend was allowing her female to run around and decided to introduce her much younger male to her. She placed him on the ground about 3 feet from the female. His "beard" instantly turned black and he charged the female. He jumped on her back and bit her on the neck. (took some time to get him to release) She wasn't hurt but it did shake up the girfriend. My questions: is this kind of aggression normal in males? Also, at what age will he realize "hey, a girl"?

What you saw was normal mating behavior! Be very careful with younger males--under a year old. If bred too young they can have complications 'after'--not being able to fully retract...

Yep I'll have to agree that thats normal mating behavior considering that I have a pair that I've interupted several times. Other than the other night when my male thought it would be funny to head bob at me and try to get to me. I don't think that my two have quite figured out what they're doing or my male just isn't ready yet because he's the passive one. Anyway thats completely normal its nothing to worry about

Ok, now do only male beardies jump on and bite at the neck or would a female do this too. We have what we thought were three females (the one in question is a year and half and "areas" look just like the others) and the last month when we have them all out, she mounts the other one and head bobs and beard went black. She's separated from the other two other wise, actually in a separate room. I swear she looks female!
