Chaco/Paraguay Swamp Snakes (Liophis poecilogyrus)

Reptile World Mar 24, 2005 06:54 PM

I was just wondering if anyone here keeps this snake? I have been tyring to locate some available for over a year, and I sadly cannot find them anywhere.

I came accross them once about 2 years ago (I stupidly didnt buy them back then). They are one of my favorite snakes. They have awesome colors (Blue/Teal Dorsal Scales, Each one outlined in black, and vibrant yellow ventral scales). The temperment was very good also, especially since the ones I handled were wild caught. Not once did they attempt to bite. I do beleive they are rear fanged, but from what I gather, the venom is harmless to humans (unless of course you develop an allergic reation).

They eat fish, frogs, worms, and other reptiles. The ones I worked with also took an occasional small mouse.

Anyway, as said, I wonder if anyone here keeps them? If so, where did you get them? I would really love to attempt breeding this species, and I also would like them as a pet species.

Perhaps go to the importers section on kingsnake and email a few importers and attach a photo. Include the snake's range and ask if they import from that region and if they can make an extra effort to ask their exporters/collectors to locate a few specimens. And then follow your email with a phone call to the importer within a few days and speak directly to the owner/manager. Your going to have to sit on their backs for months to get what you want as its a typical colubrid perhaps imported from one of the few central american countries that exports. And ask to have the snake included in their normal shipment of animals from that region unless you have the big bucks to make it a special order. Do some research on the internet and try to locate the local name of the snake in that region to assist locating it there. Good Luck and get me one also!

Well, I guess it was about the same time frame you were talking about, when I picked up my pair. Awesome snakes! My male converted to pinkies right away, but my female would only eat tree frogs. However, how happy this story may seem it has a sad ending.

My female was devoured by an eastern chain king that found it's way into my snake shed and into a few of my snakes cages before I was able to capture him. And then about a year later my male escaped from his enclosure, never to be found again...

I've been keeping my eyes open for them since then. But if I remember right, the area these ones were exported from an area a Paraguay that is now protected from exportation of native species. I know that they have a much wider range and that there are a few different subspecies, but I'd love to get my hands on another pair too!

Yeah, I unfortunatly heard too that Paraguay is now closed and nobody knows for how long.

I want to kick myself so bad every time I think about me not buying them at Hamburg. They were there, I had money, I thought "Ah, I will wait until next time". Too bad Next Time never happened .
