Need some advice re: breeding my Okeetee's

Passport Mar 24, 2005 07:05 PM

Last year I was successful in breeding my Brooksi Kingsnakes. This year my Okeetee's are in their third year and quite large. I purchased them as pair from a very reputable breeder. I have also probed them and show m/f. They brumated this winter and appear ready to produce. However, there doesn't seem to much interest from the male toward the female. I haven't stood over them (I work) all day to see if copulation actually took place. But everytime I looked they are just cuddled together but no "action". This just doesn't seem right to me. The female shed a few days ago but the male is ready and hasn't actually shed yet. I placed her in his tub on newspaper. Any suggestions?

Extra humidity in the early evening, and don't clean the cage too often. The extra stink (pheromones) seems to wind them up. Misting in the evening will stimulate natural breeding conditions. Also, if it is in the upper 60's to 70's and there is a storm; OPEN THE WINDOW. I don't get a lot of opportunities to do that in Idaho, but during the warmer parts of the year I do. The weather has a big affect on them, and letting that ionically charged air inside excites the animals a lot. I put my males in my females' cages but many successful breeders do it the other way round.
Good luck.
