Ok experts. I am free for spring break. Can anyone tell me if it is to early (cool) to get out and get looking? The forcasted temps are in mid 40s in the mornings and 65-70 for daytime highs. Still sounds cool to me, but I am just going by the temps that you guys recommended for my enclosure. It has been pretty wet lately as well. I am in north central NC (Wake Forest/Henderson)and south central VA (kerr and gaston lake area).

Thanks
Jason

It sounds like good spring herping to me. Flipping trash could be good and amphibians should be breeding.

Get out there!

This is a great time for frogs, but to early and cool for snakes. You should start seeing snakes starting in early May.

Take my word for it, cricket frogs are fun to collect. You can get some eggs for your classes.

Field temps are a lot different than captive maintenance temps. Found my first snake of the year this morning, a Western diamondback. It was 60*F. at about 9:30 am. It was a nice, fat adult coiled outside a rock pile. Springtime snakes will find ways to raise their body temps when the air temp is cooler. I think temps in the 60's are fine. Look for places where the snakes could be sunning or getting warmed by surface objects, like tin, etc.
