Looking for a lizard/gecko for my 40gal L

Chrysemys Jul 09, 2003 01:45 PM

Hey,
I have an empty 40gal L and im looking for something to put in it. I would like something that could stay in there throughout it's life. I also have a bunch of filters and heaters laying around so maybe something that likes the water? Any ideas would help...
Thanks,
Chris D.

Ooh! Oooh! Crocodile skink! Triblonotus! I think you could at least keep a pair in there, you'd have to ask on the skink forum to be sure. I think that's the smallest semi-aquatic lizard you're likely to find, and they're very very cute.

Thanks, I will look into them...

After reading a bit about them, they seem to just like a shallow pan of water. I was think more like half of the tank being water, maybe the water being 6in deep in places, then haveing vines, branches going over the water ect. Will this work or will they not swim? Thanks,
Chris D.

You'd have to ask.. I always envisioned them swimming. They're just a dream for me right now. (I'm out of room for skinks)

Ok thanks, I will post back when I get the answer...

40 gallon might be alright for a Chinese Crocodile Lizard Shinisaurus crocodilurus. Bigger would be better though of course. They're very aquatic. I had one 14 years ago or so and he was a really neat critter. Ended up selling him to a zoo to start a breeding program. My all time favourite lizard. They aren't available that often, but when I went looking for them on-line (posted want ads on every forum) a few popped up. They're not cheap, but definitely a cool lizard. When I get my next house in a few years- with more room - I'll be setting up a large display cage and looking for them again.
