Flaking of the shell

hi-Im answering this question for somebody who can't get on the boards because hes not registered

he has a red eared slider thats shell is flaking off, he says that he stays in the water alot more than he ever has before he says the flaking is comming from his mid side. THAT is all he told me therefore all i know.

what could that be? I don't think its shell rot eather

Sounds like normal shedding to me. Nothing to worry about as long as there is no white patches, holes, or mushy soft areas.

Scutes flaking off in small pieces isn't normal but large pieces are normal. Make sure your friend is not feeding the turtle shrimp. Shrimp can carry a bacteria that can infect the shell. Have a look at this Cooter that had been fed shrimp a long time and got a shell infection. See if this is the kind of flaking the turtle has.
