Fruit fly media

Justin M Mar 25, 2005 01:54 PM

Hello,

I am aware that there are fruit fly medias out there but I was just wondering what everyone else does. Who makes there own? Who buys? Where do you get it from and how much? Just kind of a consensus because I'm running out of mine and was just looking into something new. Thanks!

I make and sell my own on my site. Others are just way to expensive if you ask me.

Look for stuff that already has mold inhibitors in it. Also, no matter whose media you go with, you have to make it work for your climate. For instance, I use equal parts media and water and use coffee filters. Other climates will call for more or less water or the use of excelsior instead of coffee filters.

I buy mine from Carolina Biological Supply Co. If you get the larger bags its cost effective.
I use mason jars and coffee filters. This way I'm not throwing away plastic containers each week.

Instant mashed potatoes are the main ingredient to my recipie. I found it online, never a mold problem and never an inhibitor. Glass gatorade bottles, paper towels, etc. FFFs breed fast and relentlessly, plan ahead, if a set goes bad, trash it and start a new group. I kept 6~8 sets going to feed a group of 8 little chameleons.
