hey there- your little guy needs a humid hide. just get a piece of tupperware, cut a hole in the side (just big enough for him to crawl through), and add either a sponge or some moss or something on the inside, and keep it moist all the time. it's very important for their health. but he's a good looking fellow. i find it helps to just let them crawl on your hand. always make sure they have a flat surface (like your hand) under them, they hate to be 'grabbed' and have their feet hanging loose, or urned upside-down. good luck.

i don't think it would be very effective, since it's porous & has no bottom. why not just check the fridge, and see what you can find, or even better, just buy a tupperware, they're only a few bucks. for the mean time, i guess you could try and stuff that into a coconut hide, but the moist bedding will just stick to the sand, which will leech out the moisture, and block the entrance.

use the lid that came with it (that's what i always do, anyways). it's okay if some light enters, but if it's really clear, i've tried putting opaque tape around the sides (like electrical tape, or this one kind of packing tape). but you don't really have to do that, if your gecko seems comfortable using it the way it is. for substrate, i use a sponge (a new sponge, that's been rinsed a lot, never one with old cleaning stuff on it), with maybe a little moss from the pet store on it (though that part isn't necessary). some other stuff people use is moist paper towel, just moss, vermiculite, or forest bedding/eco earth.

If you want a humid hide whick looks natural, I would get tupperware, and cut a hole in the top so what is inside if it is loose (vermiculate, peat, pearlite) disnt escape and make a mess. Then you could buy some moss from a petstore ro find some from outside and bak it in the over for 25-45 minutes on 425 degrees (to rid it of nasty little buggies and parasites and micro organisms) and with 100% silicone with no mildew perventitives, attach it to the container. It looks a lot more natural, and still works. It is VERY important you thouragly bake the moss and use 100% silicone without mildew preventitives as opposed to other adheasives. You will have to wait for about 48 hours before the fumes are gone before you put the hide in. You may also be able to use white glue, though I am not sure. Keep in mind- this is a teeny bit more risky than plain old boaring tupperware. Another problem with this is that crickets tend to hide in it. o_O

Good job in getting you leo to let you touch it. keeping them is much eaisier and less stressful, for you and the gecko, as well as more enjoyable if you can handle the animal. Have a good time with yours. She's beautiful.

Cool looking leo.

It looks like you have him on Calci-sand...if you do i would recomend switching substrates ASAP. Sand is ok for adults but calci-sand is not ok for leo's of any ages. It clumps solid when wet and have tons of really sharp jagged edges, a combination that can literally shred your leo's insides and cause serious impactions. If you like the look of sand you can buy washed, screened, fine-grain play sand from home depot...its way cheaper than calci-sand anyway only costing you 3$ for a 50lb bag

What about when the moss needs to be changed? Because it's organic it will eventually rot...though it does take a long time. The advice on the silicone it good, I use it all the time for making hides. Take it from an artist, the white glue (Elmers) can't be used. Even when dry it is water soluable, so when you wet the moss, you'll just make a sticky mess.

Yes, I see how white glue would not work. Messy.

Moss takes a long time to rot. A very long time. if you get it from the wild, it should still have a thin layer of dirt on it. As long as there is this dirt, it will last literally for years. Ask anyone who owns a tropical vivarium, it lasts forever. Even in my tropical vivarium, where it is constantly hot and humid, I have had absolutly no problems. I suppose it it was to start to rot for some reason, just pull the whole hide out, then scrape off the scilicone. if you have one of those wallpaper/paint removers, it will be very easy. A small knife would work, too. The nice thing about silicone is that it bonds thouragly, but comes off eaisly with a razor. If you were to start it, you can even just peel it off, nice and cleanly. Even try putting a bit up against your damp hide. you will be able to peel it off. All you would have to do after that is silicone on more moss.

Note- moss takes a lot of water to stay perfectly green. unless you mist it vigoursly every day to every other day, it will be normal to see it browning. I find brown looks best against sand, (what I use for ground cover, no wars on this subject, please) and still looks good against tile or carpet. If, for some reason, you want it gren again after it has browned, all you have to is soak it, and if you keep it moist for three days or so, it will go green again.

I hope this helps.
