How to make glass slide better?

ta2edskin Mar 25, 2005 05:38 PM

I was wondering if anyone has a good idea how to make glass slide better in a plastic track? I have 2 pieces that are 25"x18" that are 1/8" and was wondering how I can make it slide easier. Thanks Steve

Steve,

Is the edge of the glass properly beveled and polished? You might take it back to the shop and have them do that to the lower edge that will run in the track. If don't want to have to pay attention to how the glass goes in the track then have both of the edges polished.

You can do this yourself. I can't recall the grit of sandpaper, though. I also used a polishing wheel on my rotary tool. Try google if you want to DIY.

But I also either rub silicone or Teflon spray into the track. This does wonders and lasts a long, long time. I have not done it in a couple of years and my glass is still running smooth.

I use a silicone spray from a company called Blaster Chemical. They have several times the amount of silicone of some of the cheaper sprays.

I had them polish all the edges. They said they could not bevel the edges cause it was 1/8".I will go get some silicone spray tommorow. All the other glass slides easy but they are only 15"x18" so they dont way that much. Thanks for the suggestion. Do you know a good way to cool off a cage? Cause I made 4 that are 3`l x 2`w x 18"h and I have a 35w halogen bulb on one side close to the vent that is 8"h x 16"l and it gets like 85-95 on the cool end but is the right temp right under the light. The cages are for bearded dragons. Thanks

That makes sense, although I don't remember ever hearing that, or having a bevel on 1/8" glass for that matter.

Is the edge pretty smooth?

Well increase ventilation or decreasing wattage but I'm guess neither of those are really what you want to do.

If you have a lot of thermal mass on the hot end you could try moving it to the cool end. Heavy rocks would be the most likely culprits.
