We need YOUR help.....(please read)

I just found out the state of North Carolina is trying to pass a Bill that would potentially prohibit most everyone in our state (including us) from keeping various Boas & Pythons that can potentially exceed 8ft in length, including; Carpet Pythons, Scrub Pythons, Boelens Pythons, Burms, Retics, etc. I'm sure most of you are aware that NY has recently passed a very similar Bill. Any ideas would be helpful.

Link to the Bill:

Once we do more research I may need everyones help to stop this Bill from being passed.

Thanks,

Hi Will.

What some people (myself included) did when the NY Ban was awaiting approval from the governor was send e-mails to NY Governor George Pataki. From the bits & pieces I read in various forums forums it appeared that a good number of folks participated. If you like I can send you the e-mail I sent the Gov.; it had some nice info.

The Ban was still implemented, BUT I believe that boas were removed from the list. This seems to be directly related to the letters because prior to the e-mail campaign boas were indeed on the list of animals to be banned.

Of course, the key is to send informative e-mails voicing informed disapproval of the proposed ban. It's not a venue for emotional outbursts. In essence, what we are doing is showing what kind of people herpers are, and the more respectful we sound, the more credible our voices become.

Let me know if you'd like a copy of my letter, and I'll send it to your website. I'd suggest that all herpers in the NC and surrounding areas get involved ASAP. Perhaps a call to action on your website and the same on other well-known breeders' websites, as well on the numerous herp forums, would spark a fire under people to get busy and try to defeat this Ban.

Best wishes,

Bill S.

I am curious as to the NY ban. Do you have an information on it? A link to read it? I am curious as to what it bans, the reasons behind it, and the guidelines associated. I remember hearing about it, and I signed onto a petition, but I never read the actual bill after approval.

I don't have a link for the NY Ban, but there were plenty of threads in the well-known forums during that time, and I do remember seeing the link posted as well as the bill's text pasted into posts.

You might want to search the various forums for NY Reptile Ban. That should provide plenty of results.

Even herpers from neighboring states (like me) were sending e-mails to the NY Governor. And like I mentioned, I believe it was all those e-mails that got boa constrictors removed from the list of animals to ban; boas were on there originally and I think they are off the list now.

Bill,

Yes, that would be fantastic if you could email some of that info my way. And I certainly agree that we should be extra careful as to how we conduct ourselves. Great advice. I'll get some info up on our site ASAP.

Thanks again,

Hey Will,

I sent off an email to Senator Garbrook and also forwarded it to the NC council. This is really terrible to see bans spreading like the plague.

I'm also planning on sending a hard copy of the letter to the Senator, since that usually gets more attention.

Do you know how things are progressing? Have you been able to procure many letters?
