Adult corn won't eat

Isa484 Mar 25, 2005 06:47 PM

My corn snake won't eat - he hasn't eaten for 4 weeks, when he usually eats once ever 8-9 days. I know that for a adult, this isn't a major problem, but I'm worried about how to get him to start eating again.

He's about 4 years old, and I've never had any trouble feeding him before at all, except when he was very young. He lives alone, and I know that the temperature is fine and that he has plenty of fresh water. He's not ready to shed at the moment either.

He seems happy and healthy generally... he's been roaming around his cage a lot, which he usually does when he's hungry... but when i put a mouse in he just ignores it. He'll go up and flick his tongue a bit, but then carry on roaming around.

The only thing that I can think of is that I got the mice from a different place to where I normally get them - in fact I ordered them online because it was cheaper, but they were defrosted when they arrived, so I re-froze them. I read somewhere that some mice smell different if they're fed differently, and that that might have something to do with it.
I also know that it's 'better' to put snakes in a seperate enclosure when feeding them, but I didn't know this when I bought him, and I've never had any problems with feeding him in his tank.

Does anyone have any ideas or advice? I'm really worried!

could be he's looking for a mate. i have a 3 1/2 foot male and he went on a hunger strike last year for a few weeks. all he wanted to do was cruse his tank ALL THE TIME. i was beside myself as to what was wrong with him. some advise i got was that he was looking for a mate. after a couple of weeks he calmed down and started to eat again.
that's my guess with yours. another thought is are the temps ok? not to hot or to cold?

I'm sure the temp is fine - it's 80 on the hot side.

It might be that he's looking for a mate. He's been kept alone since I got him as a hatchling though, but I suppose it's instictive. I'll leave him for a while and try again. For all I know, "he" might be a "she" - I've never wanted to breed, so I never found out the gender.

So long as he's still happy and active I'll let him alone for a bit.

Thanks

I have an adult male that just went a little over 11 weeks without eating. He's normally a great eater; even eats when blue. Last night I had a thawed hopper I wasn't going to use so I threw it in. He ate and then acted indignant that it wasn't bigger. Who knows???
