Another stupid genetics question.

phiber_optikx Mar 25, 2005 08:58 PM

I was wondering, If you mixed a striped corn snake with... for arguments snake we will say a butter (good colors for the argument) Will you get a corn with the colors of a butter but also with a stripe? Or is there more to getting striped morphs to it than that? Could u mix about any morph with a stripe and get the colors with a stripe? I know this is kind of a dumb question because I have a genetics wizard ut it is still hard for me to visualize when it is just words... BTW, a striped corn mixed with a butter corn is 100.00% het. Butter, het. Stripe. But I still can't visualise...

To get any particular morph, BOTH parents must be a carrier of the desired trait, whether they be homozygous(showing the trait) or heterozygous(carrier of trait) But now that I have typed that I may be wrong. In ball pythons there are co-dominant traits like the pastel. A pastel bred to a normal will give you 50% pastels. I apologize if Im confusing you more here. I dont think however that there are any co-dominant morphs in the corn world. Now I need someones help. Im going to bed. LOL

So are you saying that to get a striped Butter corn (just an example) I would need to have a male Butter that is het for stripe and a female Stripe that is het for butter?

phiber_optikx Mar 26, 2005 02:21 AM

Female is : Amel Caramel het. Stripe
Male is : Stripe het. Amel het. Caramel
Offspring is predicted :
12.50% het. Amel, het. Stripe, het. Caramel
12.50% Amel, het. Stripe, het. Caramel
12.50% Caramel, het. Amel, het. Stripe
12.50% Amel, Caramel, het. Stripe
12.50% Stripe, het. Amel, het. Caramel
12.50% Amel, Stripe, het. Caramel
12.50% Stripe, Caramel, het. Amel
12.50% Amel, Stripe, Caramel

Amel & caramel is butter for those who don't know offhand. So according to the genetics wizard... if they produce 10 babies about 1 will be a butter stripe?

Well, going purely by the stats, one in eight will be a Butter Stripe.

There's a very big BUT to the art of prediction though.... That is "Nature Doesn't Read The Manual".

If you get eight eggs laid by the combo you've previously described, you could easily end up with four Butter Stripes or none at all.

Predictor software is purely theoretical and shows you what you could potentially end up with from a set combination of parents. Sometimes real life just doesn't play by our rules. Frustrating isn't it?

Ive been reading this forum almost daily for three years. Every time I think I have it figured out I read a post and realize how little I really know about Corns. Hang in there.

I am really starting to think that they should use pictures on these genetics calculators. So slow ppl like me can more easily understand them. Btw another question... I was messing around on the calculator and noticed something that I couldn't quite picture.. There is a possibility that my stripe butter would turn out het caramel, het amel, and het stripe. Would this look like a normal corn or would it come out looking like any one of the three?

repzoo44 Mar 26, 2005 10:08 PM

What genetics wizard are you using. If you have marcels you can choose an option that will tell you what the snake will look like not just the traits. So, instead of 25% het amel, het caramel, het stripe, it would say 25% het butter, het stripe. Might make it a little easier. Maybe not. Picture would be cool but it wouldnt help with het animals since they look normal.
