How important is it for eggs to be covered with medium?

RyanT Mar 26, 2005 03:00 AM

This is my biggest concern so far, not bad considering the eggs were laid a little more than 12 hours ago. I didn't pull the clutch apart of course. So the whole clutch is sitting just as I found it on top of the substrate in the egg chamber. The 4 on the bottom are about 50% into the vermiculite/perlite. The 3 on top aren't even touching it. They're just stuck to the tops of the bottom 4 and one is actually positioned vertically. Could any of this cause a foreseeable problem? Will they be alright out in the open and will the one sideways still develop properly? Thanks. Ryan.

Some people use a no-substrate method to incubate. I use a vermiculite mixture and like to cover the eggs from 1/2 - 3/4. In your case, you could build up walls against the eggs on the outside. The key is to keep the humidity high enough that the eggs do not prematurely collapse.

Is it alright to be opening the chamber and messing around in there? Obviously, the temp is gonna drop drastically and then have to come back up. Can't that shock the eggs? Or is it alright in moderation? As it is, I'm afraid of what I'm doing to them when I open the lid for 5 seconds to stick my temp gun in. Perfect 89 by the way. I feel so neurotic about this. I'm never like that. My kids being born was less stressful than this. I just need to get through this one and see how easy it is and all the rest will a piece of cake. If this first one doesn't kill me before all that can happen.

When I open up my eggs container for viewing or whatever, I do it outside where the temps are about the same as inside the incubator (I live in Florida). That way the temps barely fluctuate. I normally open the egg chamber once every 10 days or so, just for fresh are circulation and to ensure all is going well.

you actually carry the egg box to the outside of the home just to open it up?.........

...ok.moving them would risk more than opening the box.....

drop any?

.............OKAyyyyyyy

..open box as much as you want to........peek everyday.......you'll get over it and ignore them sooner or later..........it takes 55 to 64 days.........

.................stop worrying........they'll hatch if they are fertile...........

.......as long as you don't drown them..........(they aren't too wet.............so they should be fine....)

I would never pick up individual eggs if that's what you mean. I really hope not. But carrying a secure container is perfectly safe as long as you don't drop it or in some way cause it to adversely effect the eggs.
