eggs starting to collapse at 45 days

reptichik Mar 26, 2005 08:37 AM

What is the earliest they could possibly hatch? I have done this before, and they have hatched closer to 60 days, and everywhere that I have read that is about the norm. Humidity is in the 80's, and has been consistently throughout incubation, and temps have ranged between 83 and 84 degrees consistently also. Could they (I have two starting to dimple) be getting ready to hatch this early? Thanks

Hi,

I think 45 days is way to early. What kind of subtsate do you use?? mabey the Humidity/moist in your substate is to high so that your eggs gonna burst.
I never heard that they hatch in 45 days.

good luck.

I am using vermiculite as the substrate. Hmmm, just up until yesterday they were nice and firm. The eggs are still white, just two of them are starting to dent a little big. Maybe I will take off the lids and see if the humidity goes down a bit. Anyone else?

Actually, It sounds like the humidity is too LOW! The eggs sound dehydrated and are crinkling/dimpling because of lack of water. Get a humidity gauge and make sure it is up towards 70%-80%

The humidity in the air is 80%, I do have a humidity gauge in there, inside the sandwich container where the eggs actually are. I did moisten the vermiculite, as that seemed a little dry, but the air humidity is at actually 87% right now.

Hi, lets see if i can help. Your eggs arent too humidified and will not burst lets say that for starters. With my eggs i have only encountered this once. The humidity in the incubator was fine but i had been a little slack and let the substrate dry out a little. I raised the humidity a little and made sure for the next few days the the substrate was wet enough and the egg firmed up and hatched ontime with all the rest.He was as healthy as the others. But you must do this right away before they get anymore dented or you risk loosing them. Hope this helps. This is by no means the exact reason for this but in my experience this was what it was and it worked a treat.
Oh and for the record, i kept him back to moniter him to see if there was any side effects of the denting of the egg and this is him. Lovely little chap isnt he!!Im keeping him now as he is great. Will make a nice breeder for next year

Thanks guys for all your help. I moistened the substrate with an eyedropper around the eggs, and the two that had dented are now filled out. I think I am out of the woods. Whew..... I will for sure keep an eye on the substrate to make sure it doesn't dry out anymore. Thanks so much, I really appreciate it

if the humidity is what you say it is then yes they may be hatching, i have never had a clutch go over 52 days. i keep temp at 86.5 and they always hatch in between 45 and 50 days!!
