Basking Lights In Vision Cages???

Sarge2004 Mar 26, 2005 09:43 AM

I have a Vision 222 that I am keeping a small Dumerils monitor in. Vision recommends using a bulb no higher than 60 watts in their 6 inch shrouds. I need to raise the heat a bit and have heard that you can use a higher wattage bulb with in reason-such as a 75w with no problems. Has anyone done this with success or used a halogen bulb for more heat? I would think that the total heat generated by the bulb is the real factor here and not the sheer wattage of the bulb. Thanks for your advice-Bill.

I believe Vision indicates a 60 watt bulb max to cover their you know what in case a larger wattage bulb burns the cage. However, if only 60 watts was really allowed then it would be near impossible to heat Vision enclosures although I think they are difficult to heat in general and are a particularly flawed design. However, I know plenty of people who use 100 watt bulbs in those cages. Test it out by putting a larger wattage and watching the cage carefully for the first hour. You'll know within that time if there is going to be a problem.

I use 100 watt bulbs in all my vision boa cages.

haven't had any problems. I use aluminum cup domes to reflect the heat down.

It's a horrible design. What do you do when the bulb in the cage shroud on the bottom of a stack of 4 or 5 cages burns out? Take down the whole darn stack? What a drag! It helps to be a body builder if you're a Vision cage owner, that's for sure.

By the way, have you received your new rack yet? How did you have it shipped? UPS or truck freight? Thanks for letting us know.

I can't remember where I saw it , but it was a site with Bearded dragons. They installed a modification on their visions they sold that had very small wing nuts around the screened side of the incandecent lite shroud so you didn't have to unstack to change a bulb. As I remeber it didn't look too bad. If I can come up with it I'll send it on to you.

Bob.
