My luck is awful this year.

snakepimp Mar 26, 2005 10:09 AM

As some of you know I just got my first pair of Leos. I have had them now for 4 days. This morning I went down to check on them and found significant amounts of blood smeared around the cage. I thought, "Oh crap, they got in a fight," but I wasn't nearly that lucky. When I inspected the female she was fine. I pulled the male out of the cage and lo, he has a prolapsed hemipenis. This just happened to my male lavender corn snake 2 days ago, that's right 2 prolapses in 3 days. I just paid $150 to have my corn worked on, and now I am broke. I cen't really pay my bills this week, an now I have another injured animal...the additionally crappy part is; I am taking care of them for a person whom I am doing a "breeding loan" with. He wasn't able to get them to breed and so I was going to give it a shot. Their setup is immaculate, and I just hope he can make it through the weekend...there are no emergency herp vets in this town.
I can't express myself here, the language wouldn't be acceptable.

My only suggestion would be to try and keep it wet, although that will be hard to do long term....it may just have to be conpletely removed by the vet, especially if it dries out...

I hope everything works out ok...

Well, luckily I have been put in contact with the Zoo vet here in Boise, and she is willing to see me. The tissue still looks viable, and so I hope he gets to keep it...thanks for the advice. I dealt with this on my corn the other day, and the doc said I did a good job of keeping it moist.

I had a male that prolapsed and a really effective home treatment is fill up a dish w/ warm (NOT HOT) water about 2" and mix some sugar in w/ the water...About 1 TBSP.

Mix it until there is not more suguar crystals in the water and place your prolapsed male in the solution for about an hour or so each day.

You could go longer but an hour should do the trick. Also just make sure his cage is very clean.

I took him to the local zoo's vet, Debbie Wiggins, she is awesome for taking care of him and billing me later.
On a Saturday, even!

Wow, she did an awesome job on him. I wish my lavender corn looked as good. I don't think he is going to breed again...
But my leo, is, I am sure of it.
