Rat Breeding

silversunkiss9 Jul 09, 2003 02:46 PM

I'm not really planning on breeding rats (not sure if I could manage to kill them), but how many snakes would a person probably have to have before rat breeding would save money compared to buying frozen?

I started on breeding mine when I needed more than a couple pinks a week. Feeders here are probably average priced but even that was rediculous. And besides. I used to raise them and sell them to the stores so it was just a switch back for me.

Even with one snake and a Sav monitor I find it cheaper to breed my own than to buy frozen/thawed especially with shipping charges added on which can sometimes be more than your actual order. Especially considering the cost of feed is usually low when you mix your own. I like to know what exactly my animals are eating anyway.

In my opinion, 1. It depends on the species, of course.
Frankly, raising rats is CHEAP. It simply requires a bit of labor. Buying rats, even frozen in bulk, is not cheap.

I'll think about what I should do. I currently have a taiwan beauty (sub-adult), ball python (adult), and corn snake (adult).
