glass reflection

jwatts Jul 09, 2003 02:50 PM

Hi I have my beardie in a 50 gallon tank and he sees his reflection sometimes in the front glass piece and scratches at it furiously I was wondering if there was a way to make the glass not reflect his image? like a spray or something but something that would still let us see him well.

Thanks

i dont think there is much you can spray on there. When my dragons do this i cover the glass with a towel for a few minuites and then uncover them again, it settles them down and usually they move away from the glass. My kids do it every so often.

Unfortunately I have yet to find a solution to this problem. Usually the only thing that calms them down is to get them out and let them run around on the floor and then when I put them back they seem to calm down some. I have just tried to get used to it because all 3 of mine act the same way. One does this more than the other two but when they all get to bangin' and scratchin'its liable to make me and my husband insane. But I bring some of that on myself because they all have window seats because they love to look outside so closing the curtains for awhile seems to work also. Although even when they are out running around then they go to the glass by the entertainment center but I have trained them, believe it or not, and they don't go near it anymore.

From what I've noticed with my beardies, they aren't actually seeing their reflection. When they stand up on their legs and scratch furiously at the front of the tank, it usually means "Get me the heck out of here and play with me!"

Since I can't see your set up, I can't determine if your beardie is really seeing his reflection or not. My guess is that he isn't. This is typical beardie behavior. Especially for the younger and juvenile dragons. They love to get attention from their owners and my beardies love to get out of their cages and explore the house (supervised of course).

If your beardie is only doing this scratching at the front sides of his enclosure - where it faces you or the room - then he's most likely scratching to get out. If he is really seeing his reflection, the beardie will usually get a black or dark beard and puff the beard out slightly. If you get a mirror you will see what I mean.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the replys, I think that he is scratching at his reflection though because if we take him out and set him on the desk he will run right to his cage and scratch at the glass some more. I wish there was something we could put up like two way mirrors only with out the mirror part, but then of course he couldn't watch us like he seems to like to do.

I think it has a lot to do with having a dragon who wants to roam.

my dragon is in a "Reptarium" so it's like a cloth screen.

he will at times just start climbing and going round the sides and looking out at the rest of the apt.

and if I open it at such a time he shoots right onto my arm if I let him and he wants to jump down and explore.

if I let him about 15 minutes later he starts looking for a hide.

and or he makes a "B" line for his reptarium -- it's up on a table so he hides under the table where it's darker.

I wonder what the area of an adult dragon in the wild is?

I bet it's a log more than the 4 to 6 square feet books state as a "Minimum" area for a dragon... probably more like 200-500 square feet perhaps?
so I bet that want to roam our homes to claim them as thiers.

I know my guy seems drawn to the kitchen garbage can... it's like he smells it and figures there should be some juciy bugs where the sent is... Not that my kitchen smells...

too bad we can't ask them what they are thinking some times ?
