Odd thing in BP Mouth

ecb Mar 26, 2005 08:04 PM

On the far back of the Left side of his mouth towards the back, its a tinny bit bigger than a cm long, it lays flat in his nouth until he opens his mouth wide
Anyone ever see this?
THe Vet thought it was something stuck in the back of his mouth, but when we swabbed his mouth it was not moving, at all. It is VERY white, and for a min I thought it was part of his Mouth Skin, but its hard/rigid, then thought might be bone, but he shows no signs of haivng any bone missing from his face, or palat
anyone know a good Anatomy of a BP page I can view?

anyone have ideas?

BTW he is a new snake for me, from a Good rescue

Please if anyone has ideas of what this could be
I do noit want to pull on it, if it might be a part of his mouth, but if its not, it needs to come out
we are seeing the vet again Monday pm
I M worried about this Snake, she does not eat, and he was supposed to be a good eater before I got him (I know they aALL are, but this guy runs a rescue, and one of the snakes he told me flat out was a bit picky, but did not stay on a food sstrike for too long)

...the vet couldn't tell if it was part of its normal anatomy? That's pretty lame if the vet has even a reasonable amount of herp experience...

given the available info, the most likely explanation short of a foreign body (ie: wood chip) is a growth of some sort, in this case likely granulation (fibrous connective) tissue surrounding a small foreign body...in some cases it's best to leave these alone if it's not affecting the snake's behavior...

If you can get a pic that would be great!

we can only get a pic if he yawns, and waiting for that is just so unbelievably frustrating (he only yawns when I am not ready, and I do not have a video camera with a long acting media, just a little digital camera with a little memory card)

and when we look with a Specula it blocks the view

We are going to look at it again on Monday, when we have the follow up visit. He has a RI and both new kids are having a well kid check up at that time
he was seen early becasue of the wheezing and popping
so maybe it will be better when we look again, and this less important issue will be looked at further

Thank You for the response

....so there may be nothing wrong at all with the mouth...misinterpretation of normal anatomy...or mucus obscuring the visual field...yes it is difficult to get pics of the inside of snake's mouth...

Yes the RI must be dealt with...Baytril is cheap but ceftazidime ( /- amikacin) is/are more effective but expensive...

Good luck and keep us posted...

On sunday when I gave the last injection I hear popping still, and that was day 6, so I was pretty worried about the Vet Check last night, but when we got tem both in, No popping or wheezing! we both checked, I let him poke around my hair and ear for a while and this time heard nothing, except one Sigh, and thats not a bad thing.
His belly scale discoloration seems to be healing VERY well with the baytril, and when we got him his eyes looked a bit blue, but when he did not go into shed I thought it might be just a trick of the light, I make sure he gets a soak every once in a while, and wait for a shed. Vet said that sometimes a extended shed can look like a lot of problems, but it will definately put him off his feed
his weight was 380gm and the info from previous owner was that he was hatched in october, seem a little big to anyone else?

Also took in the Girl, she is supposed to be a WC female the previous owner had for 3 years, she is only 560, and not skinny, looks good, so not sure she is really that old, but cannot be sure. Rescue is reliant on info provided by previous owner, if any is recieved at all.
When I picked her up she also had some healing scale conditiopn, just like the male (actually looked worse on her when we picked her up) and last night you could barely see any of it
No RI Sx at all, head shy, but relaxed nicely when left alone, and then she allowed herself to be picked up and held calmly.

Vet is quite please that I got them both together, although both of us know snakes should be housed seperatly, when these two guys are put down at oposite ends of the table, each with their own lights, the go off their towels and go across the cold table to cuddle up together.
When I take one out of the tank, and leave the other in alone the remaining one wont go in the hide, but will go around hides, or behind them, but not in them
When i got back from his first vet visit she was curled up in a ball like she was scared of something, with just her nose peeking out

has anyone had snakes that did better together than seperate?
or am I being bizare and anthrapamorphizing, the objective behavior sems to back up that they actually need each other

When we went back last night for the followup I asked him about this inclusion and did he really have no idea what it was
He said he could not get a lok at it, he thought he saw something one time when he was examening, but could not get a good look again, so could not be sure
Follow up exam shows it to be Gone (the boy opened his mouth up really well this time) mouth is clear now, found a couple little lumps of beige/grey stuff, They are Gm staining part of it and looking under microscope for the other half, see what it is, but it was not attached, just kinda stuck in the pocket next to the trechea.
