Herping Results for 03/25/05-Chino & Riverside

reiley Mar 26, 2005 08:44 PM

It was quite active at both Chino and Riverside on 03/25/05. There were so many lizards at both locations I did not bother counting. I took a few pictures of what appealed to me and am posting some of the better ones.

There were many animals in Chino, mostly various spiny lizards. However, there was one toad that I was able to shoot. This was a major discovery (at least in my opinion). I love toads. I don't know a huge amount about them, but I love them none the less, so this little guy was a neat find. He was just a little over an inch long. I identified him as a California Toad (Bufo Boreas Halophilus if you want to be specific). I wish I knew how old he was however (hint).
Unfortunately this is not the best picture because after turning over the board it was not in his best interest to hold still for any period of time, but I did my best.

The rest of my pictures are from Riverside. I got there after going to Chino so I ended up arriving at 1pm (a little late). It was not completely devoid of life however. Besides the many squirrels and rabbits there were several reptilian subjects available for viewing pleasure.
This photo is of a cocky little Male Granite Spiny who was repeatedly testing his boundaries with me and doing little push-ups to mock me any time he was in one place. Cute as it was it made many of the pictures blurry because of his little arrogant antics. This was asside from the usual issue of not being able to get very close to him for a better picture.
He was deffinately a stunning specimine that was around 6in despite his obvious regrow and obviously more careful as a result.

This wonderful little Red Diamond Rattlesnake was a treat to see. I thought that I would not see one because it was a little late in the day (1pm at Riverside), but I got lucky. I did not get the chance to sex it because I take my pictures first and then identify later. This is a picture of how I found it originally.

Here is a second picture of the same Red. This picture was taken after I used a hook to pull it out to get a better picture of the whole body. Shortly after the Red got too shy and hid back under the rock that I found it.
This little rattler was only about 2ft long.
