Leucistic bearded dragons

guy2 Mar 26, 2005 09:35 PM

My first question is what is the difference between leucistic and snow bearded dragons? My next queston is are leucistics the next big thing? Are they going to be important to establish new morphs and colors? And finally how long do you think it'll be until the price drop. I havent seen them for sale under $500

Leucistics usually have black eyes while snows have normal colored eyes. Who knows if leucistics will be the next big thing. They may be important, probably for their black eyes. The price won't drop until mor epeople begin breeding them. Sandfires strated out being expensive and now the price has dropped to $250 at the Sandfire Dragon Ranch. Leucistics can be hets, so if you want a cheap leuistic producer to breed, get a het.

Leucistic Bearded Dragons do not have Black eyes. True Leucistics in most Reptile species have black eyes. To Date there are no True Leucistic dragons just marketed Leucistics. They are merely white Hypopastels.

I have a 12" black eyed female bearded dragon born into my collection last year. Her color is different than any other bearded dragon I've ever seen or produced.
I'd like to take her to a reptile show where somebody more knoweledgable on genetic's could look at her and make a decsion as to what she truley is.... Pictures just don't capture her unique color and black eye's.

* I also had a two headed bearded dragon(unrelated to black eyed) born into my collection on 2-21-05 which is still doing great.

Black eyes is a genetic trait that shows up rarely in unproven genetic lines. The translucent line that we have here in the states carries this trait. Here is a picture of some dragons with black eyes who are also translucents. As far as siamese twins go they are more common in reptiles than any other group of animals. Pics look good!!

The leucistic dragons you see on the market are not TRUE leucistics. Alphadragonz is correct. They are "marketed leucistics". Nobody is really sure what that means. It is known, however, that the leucistics are DIFFERENT than clear-nailed hypo-pastels.

1) If you breed a leuc to a normal dragon, the offspring will not be "lightened". If you breed a hypo to a normal dragon, the offspring will be lightened.

2) Leuc breedings are creating UNUSUAL color morphs. If you breed two hypos together, you won't get something unusual.. If you breed leucs, you will get a spin of the color wheel. I have personally seen dragons with orange, purple, yellow, eetc... from het to leuc breedings. They look nothing like their folks. Weird.

3) Leuc and Hypo do share the clear-nailed trait.. which is strange. If you breed a hypo to a leuc, you'll get a clear-nailed baby.. wagain.. weird. Should get a double het for leuc and hypo.

I think it's all very exciting.. leuc to leuc breedings, leuc x hypo, and then factoring in the transleucents will create exciting new morphs in this species..

I've never seen or heard of a leucistic to leucistic breeding. What do you come out with? I would assume leucistics. But somewhere there must be a problem because I don't see people advertising this. I'm I just behind the time? Could someone update me...LOL.
