Help with feeding response as well...

dmlove Mar 26, 2005 10:23 PM

Well Morpheus is growing like a weed (BW Arg Tegu) - He is about 2 - 2.5 ft from guesstimation. He is eating a few supers, one or two small roaches (both treats, just since they are too small to fully appetize him), along with grapes occassionally, and as many mice as he can eat. Usually one jumbo or two or three weanlings etc. I used to thaw the mice in a red cup near him, but he understood that meant feeding time and went nuts. I thawed away from him, and thought if I surprise him he wont go nuts enough to get my hand out of the cage. Right now he is in a temp cage (big enough for him, just waiting to get his real big cage finished) - It has lots of floor space, but not a lot of height (only about a foot of height). The top slides off. I take my small hemostats and pick up the feeding cup w/ mice in it and usually open and drop it in the cage. He gets so excited he stands on his hind legs and jumps up and tries to bite anything he can. Luckily I use nasty tasting non-toxic hand sanitizer before hand, so if he does grab my finger, it tastes horrible. He has done it a few times, scares the crap outta me. Its usually a game of distracting him to another side of the cage in time for me to open and drop it in without him noticing the top open (he can jump out if he tries). I can usually manage, but my dad is watching him while I go camping for 4 days. Any suggestions to calm his wild feeding response so my dad doesnt flip and not feed him, or worse, if Morpheus bites him (even gently), my dad will go nuts and it will be my head and maybe him outta there. Dont want that to happen! LOL. Lemme know if you have any ideas!

In addition to the flat hand whoa(see below) I use long tweezers or tongs. That way your hand isn't associated with food.
