I resued a 8 ft burm from a flea market in Florida

Hubbybear672 Mar 27, 2005 12:53 AM

I got a few questions... She is currently being treated for and RI. her heat has been raised to 90-95 degees she's not eating and dropping weight fast.. Well My question is.. she has very very dry skin.. she gets a bath 2-4 times a week and get sprayed down everyday 2 to 3 times a day
and doesnt seem to be helping with her dry skin is there anything I can buy that would help with that? Also is there a product I can give her to get her vitamams and things she needs til she's eating again.. I have never seen a case this bad with dry skin. she doesnt have mouth rot which is real suprizing with the condition she was in when I got her. she was stuffed in a 30 gallon tank with another 5 ft snake.. so Oh course I paid the price they wanted for her to just get her outta there... I wish I could of done more.. My wife even cryed when she seen the shape she was in. Any help is needed and will be tryed to see if we can get her back to normal. I own 8 snakes burms, ball, corns. So I am not inexperinced with them just I am at a stump and dont know what else to do. thank you for helping or your suggestions in advance!

Now you said that she is being treated for an RI? Are you doing this or is a vet doing this? If a vet is doing this, I am surprised that they haven't brought these things to your attention. It sounds like she needs a vet FAST!! Don't wait around, just do it. Theres not gonna be an easy fix for this one. Just try to get her to a vet and keep her as warm and comfortable as you can in the process.

ok first you say the heat is up 90-95...but what is the humidity/ sounds like the burm is severely de-hydrated...weird as it sounds my snakes like gatorade when they are sick. may be good m may be bad but they like it and it keeps them hydrated. the other poster was right though, if the snake is sooo dry, and losing weigth there is something more than a RI here. get it to a good herp vet. if you are in florida i know there re a lot of good ones there. i used to have a wonderful guy that did all my stuff when i lived in sunrise fla> he did all exotics and was good. even saved my largest iguana through surgery one time. ill try to find his name and number and post it laster although that was in the 1980's! i applaude you on gettin the snake away from those clowns at the flea market. look for mites also...soak him a little more and see if any show up in the water. i hope you can save him...i have seen them bad like this before. my big male had pneumonia and was dehydrated when i got him. it took 6 months but i have had him for a loooong time now and he is perfect! and i tell ya its almost like he knows that i saved him from certain death. good luck bro

Well, I'm glad you saved his little (or not) tail. Here's some random thoughts... Shots in the dark so to speak. I'm assuming you're getting him to a good herp vet.
Is it possible that the skin troubles are caused by a few bad sheds lying one over the other?
And if you try Gatorade (never heard of using it like that and I very strongly recommend checking with your vet before trying it) I'd water it down a fair amount. From what I've heard, with humans, the electrolytes (salts, vitamins etc) in Gatorade are much more concentrated than what we actually need to hydrate properly.
I'm glad he has a good home now and good luck.

The humity is at 71% and the temps at 93...She is currently on baytrill injections for the RI. The vet said that the weight lost is not bad( I just think its bad.. but anyone with a baby would think that way) She had a swim in the tub again today and loved it. I just was getting opinions from other ppl who have burms and deal with them everyday. Thank you all for your help and suggestions... they are greatly welcomed!

Great to hear that you have him taken care of. Good job and keep it up.

Everything seems pretty well answered here, so I have little to add. Good job on the rescue and the trip to the vet

As far as gatorade goes, it does contain alot of sugars that are uneccessary, unflavored pedialyte for infants is what works the best. Honestly though, if anything other that regular tap water is needed to hydrate your snake, then it needs more than oral fluids; your vet would have insisted on IP or IV fluids already.
