Sustained my first bite, could use a little help!

shanna Jul 09, 2003 03:05 PM

Yesterday I was cutting some zucchini for Spike in his room. He came over to eat while I finished cutting it, like usual, but for some reason he lunged and bit me. I am lucky that it was extremely minor and barely broke any skin, but it scared me. He has never done anything like this before! I have cut food up for him like this hundreds of times and I can't understand what was different? He doesn't seem to be in his breeding season (as he usually gets more orangey), but he's still pretty young and I guess could be. I don't really know.

Besides the obvious (cut the food elsewhere), what do you think I can do? More importantly, what do you think his problem was? I just can't imagine why he would do this.

Thanks for your help,
Shanna

My girls get a little "excited" when they see a treat or any food for that matter coming their way...They will throw themselves into their doors and make it nearly impossible to put plates in...and wheat bread...forget it open, throw, close, in a very fast manner lol maybe he was a little excited...are you sure he is a he? oneof my girls have orange on them too.....good luck Lyn

My guess is he for some reason thought you were a zuchini... a great, big, yummy one! Its like horses thinking that someone's finger is a carrot, sometimes they're not that bright when it comes to food. I'd say if its a minor bite that barely broke the skin, it was either a "feed me now" or "oops you're food" nip and not something aggressive, but maybe keep an eye on him while you're chopping food for a while. Last time Tempest nailed me a good one, I had lots of warning and there was no question he was mad! (I ignored warnins - had to treat his tummy injury)

I don't think this is a big deal or anything, just really surprised me! He really gave no warning signs (that I'm aware of) and perhaps he just thought I was a tasty morsel. It was just the way he jumped at me that really scared me. He’s been perfectly normal since and up until then. I guess he was just really hungry!

Thanks again,
Shanna
