Ribbon snake help please!

ross83 Mar 27, 2005 06:06 AM

I rescued a ribbon from my local pet store a couple of days ago, it was being kept in foul conditions. Well anyways, it's a male about 1ft long and the width of a pencil....(any ideas of age?)

The guy said he fed it exclusively on pinkies, I thought it should be fed mainly on fish, worms, crickets etc... and subsidised with the odd pinkie?

Any advice with regard to the husbandry would be appreciated as i'm unfamiliar with this species!

I have an Eastern Ribbon that feeds exclusively on scented pinks. What is interesting is it will not eat pinks scented with rosies but will eat pinks scented with either goldfish or trout. My Ribbon is very healthy looking. Ribbon Snakes do not eat worms like other members of the Thamnophis genus. They also are very nervous snakes and need a good hide. I rarely see mine out and about in its cage. Do not expect it to ever tolerate handling well and always assume it is going to dart out of the cage without warning. Otherwise they seem to be hardy captives but internal parasites may be an issue for wc or fish/amphibian fed individuals.

Yeah I've noticed the tendancy to dart, they have explosive speed! When I held him in the store he was very docile, but he never had a heat source.....since he has been under the mat he has been an entirely different snake. Hard to believe that people recommend them for kids!
