Could use some advice...

spot012 Mar 27, 2005 10:42 AM

I have 3 leos, a male juvie and 2 babies. The juvie isn't in the same tank as the babies are. I don't know the sex of the babies yet but I'm worried that both, or just one, will be a male. I don't have any other tanks and I couldn't give either up. Even if they're both females I'm starting to get worried. They seem to fight a lot. One has a cut on its head and the other looks like his foots been bitten. I know I need to seperate them, I just don't have a way to. Please any advice would really be appriciated here. Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry if sounds mean but you shouldn't be owning geckos if you don't even have enough money to set up a simple cage for one gecko.

Your geckos are fighting and injuring each other, how are you going to pay for vet bills if one of them gets a serious injury?

Take the babies back to the store or at least one but chances are you still might be stuck with two males in the end. It's really not fair on the animals to keep them together and let them hurt each other.

I agree, far too often people own animals without consideration to how they will pay for upexpected emergencies. If you do not have the money to set up a new tank for a lizard (whioch can be as simple as a rubbermaid container, a hide space and an UTH) then your eally shouldn't own these lizards. I would return at least one to the store.

sorry is i sound harsh, i do not intend to be mean, just honest

I don't understand why you can't give any of them up? If it's an emotional attachment, you're going to feel 10x worse if they kill each other. I also really hate it when people complain that they can't take care of their animals because of financial reasons. When you got that animal, you took on a responsibility to take care of all its needs, so you'd really better find a way to get the money to take care of them or give them to someone who can afford it. Trust me, I know what it's like to not have money, I'm a fulltime college student and I have a 3 yr old. But I always make sure I set aside a few hundred dollars to make sure my pets get what they need. My pets are like my children, and if my daughter gets sick or needs something, I take care of it immediately no matter what. The same goes for my pets. They have vet insurance for cats and dogs now, maybe someday it'll be available to all pets. But until then, stop making excuses for not properly caring for your pets.

You could always try using a tank divider. It's best if the tank is at least a 20g long. You can buy plastic dividers in the fish department at Petco or Petsmart (for about $10).. they are clear with little holes in them. If the leo's fight, you may want to use contact paper on the divider so they can't see each other. You can also try cardboard as a means to seperate. If you are using an under tank heater, just position it in the center of the tank so that it benefits both sides. And I definately recomend that you have a secure lid on the tank.. just incase a leo decides to try wall climbing.
