Ratchett Died Today =o(

JethrozMom Jul 09, 2003 03:13 PM

I just found my male jax, Ratchett, dead in his cage. He was perfectly fine yesterday, but it looks like what happened is that he went for a cricket and missed, and his tongue got stuck to one of the vines in his enclosure and the stress of being stuck killed him. I noticed he was hanging in sortof a funny position when i just went to mist him, and when i put my hand in, i saw that he was dead. =o( The female, Clank, is fine, hanging out in her vine and just looking greenish like she always does.

I'm pretty upset, they were my favorites.

you'd think there would be some sort of biological mechanism to protect from this very problem. I would think cham's miss their target from time to time.

Regardless, it is tragic and I am very sorry

Sorry to hear this. All this may not matter now, but I really doubt it was a missed shot that killed him. May I suggest another cause? Cham's tongues are not that sticky. The stickiness is partly from mucous and mostly just the fleshy, knobby, folded shape of the tip, so unless his tongue was physically tangled in something he should have been able to free it. People would be finding many many dead chams hanging by their tongues if missing a shot was the direct cause of death. However, I have noticed that chams who have recently died or are close to death start drooping their tongue tip out of their mouth. When the gland on the tip gets dry it DOES tend to stick to whatever it is touching. He could have suffered some type of sudden illness, laid his head down and as his tongue lay exposed it dried out. When he fell off his tongue just stuck where it was.

I had that exact thing happen years ago with a young wc senegal, she was just too far gone when I got her and after a couple days her tongue was all the way out and she could not retract it, terrible thing this.

I have an extra male jackson's, Ive had hm a month, he is healthy, still not quite full grown. His middle horn has a very slight curve. When you want to get another, let me know, I would probably let him go cheap, or for trade , if you pay postage.

Jaime, I am so sorry to hear that your Jax died. It must have been a horrible shock to find him that way in the cage. I'm sad for you...it's so hard to lose any pet.
