Ever had a snake that was...

ZFelicien Mar 27, 2005 03:34 PM

BIG enough 2 eat fuzzies-adult mice but only wanted smaller items?

well I got a Brooksi pair (form the same clutch) that have that problem... they are both big enough to take hopper mice yet they only want pinkies, the biggest items they take are peach fuzzies

... any one of you ever got your snakes to take mice of proper size?

If so, how?

Thanx

I had an eastern milk snake (lampropeltis T triangulum) that was big enough to take small adult mice but would only take pinks and crawlers.

I sure did, what I do is feed them tons of whatever they want to keep em growing. However sometimes when they start to go opaque after lots of meals they have a long shedding cycle, and after 2 weeks without eating and freshly shedding they sometimes switch up to the next size mouse. Sometimes they will only eat a large one THAT time and want smaller food for a while longer but most snap out of it, especially in summer months. Tom Stevens

Today I was at the ol pet shop dropping off a screen for repair. I have a male breeder Pine, over 4 foot but skinny as they come. He came out of brumation lookin like an overgrown Garter snake but since he does this every year I don't sweat it. This particular snake is so freakin fussy it is ridiculous, his plus side is he makes beautiful babies but anyway..... He eats everything from small Rats to hopper mice. Sometimes insists on live, other times eats whatever. He hadn't ate a thing since coming out of cooling though he did kill a mouse and not eat it. He is one of the only snakes in my collection with a name, Estupido. He is so stupid he will push a f/t rodent around his cage for hours and never pin it and eat, even when he kills live mice if he uncoils it is the same scene. Today I got him a bunch of huge Rat pinkies. He gobbled them all down and has a nice lump in him. I will soon offer him more to eat, more appropriately sized rodents. If it doesn't work I will give him more small live offerings. The bottom line is give them what they want. I bet he eats small rats again after breeding season. It would be nice if they all ate the most economical sized rodents whenever we offer them but if not....they still need to eat so whatever works....ya know?? Tom Stevens

a long time ago i had a glossy snake with some what of a similar problem. she'd kill a live mouse and just leave it there... or she'd start to "down it" then spit it back up... the snake was strictly a nocturnal feeder... all how I tried she'd never eat during the day, so by the time i woke up in the morning the dead mouse stunk up the place... gotta make U wonder.. what are these lil guys thinking...
