burning smell

kailin120288 Mar 27, 2005 06:01 PM

i just put a new 150 watt bulb in my lamp and it started to smell like it was burning. the lamp says it can hold a bulb up to 150 watts and i cant go a size smaller because the temps arent good enough. what should i do.

haven't had that problem myself except with my daughters...turned out the heat from the light was melting a plastic strip on her lizards screen cover...it's best you do something though...you certainly wouldn't want a fire...

hummm what do you suggest i do because the only thing that will work is the 150 watt bulb.

you might want to get another lamp...it's always possible that even a new bought lamp could be malfunctioning for one reason or another...is the lamp sitting on anything? is any part of it near anything that it could be heating up?

I had that happen to me once.

The screen on the lid was actually plastic.

So make sure it is a METAL mesh.

is it in a ceramic socket?? If it is in a standard plastic socket (the part the bulb screws in to) you are likely melting the socket and risking fire. Or it could be the plastic of cgae or lid as suggested. I did that once - oops!

its not a plastic lid or a plastic socket but the only thing that is plastic is the liner on the outside of the tope part of the tank.

yeah, I melted the heck out of a lid by having a basking light too close. I try to stick with all metal now.
