When sexing a snake, can you hit the musk gland on a male and wrongly sex him as a female?

Coincidently I am currently taking a Basic Reptile Medicine course and this was topic for today's class. When probing a female, you end up in the sent glands and enter 4-6 scales in depth. While males do have scent glands, when probing you enter a hemipenis or 6-14 scales in depth. No one that I have discussed this with has ever had or heard of a problem with entering the scent glands in males.
