Caging: Easy to find eggs or more natural

Shades Mar 27, 2005 09:28 PM

I'm struggling with a decision to make my caging for a pair of phantisticus and sikorae (separate caging of course!). I have gone with some full blown caging thar will make finding eggs difficult. Whaddyathink about the trade off of limiting egg laying spaces, thereby giving up natural habitat.

good idea, i've tried having lots of cover towards the top of the cage, then just 1 or 2 plants and pieces of corkbark that are fairly easy to remove to try to persuade the gecko into laying where i want it. it's only been like this for a short while so i don't know how well it will work.

You don't have to give up the natural look in order to make finding the eggs easier just try and limit the cover on the very bottom of the cage. You can take a look at the pictures I took of my cage. I just have coco fiber on the bottom with a small area with dried maple leaves. My female aways lays either in the leaves or in the potted plants.

i have fairly extensively planted enclosures myself, and only once can i say that i have failed to find a pair of eggs. it was most likely because i wasnt expecting eggs out of my pietschmanni at all, i hadnt observed any breeding or anything. youre best bet is to keep a close eye on your females, you can often tell visually when they're gravid and as long as you keep your eyes on them daily, you can tell when they've dropped eggs. it takes a good long time for females to lay their eggs too, so if one disappears suddenly, look harder for her cuz chances are she might be hiding to lay her eggs. good luck
